Track has started, yet again...
...and the girls are still rockin' it. Tess and Elsa both chose to commit to rigorous training schedules before track season started, and they are starting to reap those benefits! They've been working hard to bring their race times down at our local track meets, which can be difficult to do when you don't have any competition in your race.
Elsa has had her eye on the Steeplechase and tackled that on my birthday. We really weren't sure how she would fair. We know she is fast, but having never jumped over the obstacles and water pit before, it was anyone's guess as to how she would do. She's such a monkey, and we shouldn't have worried. She easily won the race and beat the varsity record by almost 30 seconds...and loved it!!!
This past weekend was the girl's first true race with any competition. Elsa ran in this Invitational last year and placed 8th for the 1500 and 7th for the 3000. She decided to save her energy for the 3000 this year and was very pleased with her decision. The weather conditions were less than ideal, and we were expecting substandard times. Amazingly enough, she grabbed 1st place (in a very hard fought race) with a time of 10:53.64! Over 40 seconds faster than she ran it last year, but most importantly, qualifying her for NATIONALS!!! She needed a time of 10:55 to qualify for the Freshman division at the New Balance Outdoor National's to be held June 13-15th in Greensboro, NC, and knew that the 20 slots open for the Freshman 2 Mile would fill up quickly. She is so happy to fill one of those slots, but even better? Tess also ran a fantastic race, placed 1st at the Invitational in the 1500, and made the qualifying standard for the Freshman Mile at Nationals! ROAD TRIP!!
She runs the Steeplechase again this Friday and is hoping to bring her time down in that race (26 seconds to go) so she can qualify not only for States, but for Nationals in that event as well. If she hits 7:20 she will qualify for Nationals. Not the freshman division, but the "best of the best" Nationals, not separated by age. We can dream, right?
