USATF Northeast Zone Youth Championships 2015
We don't have an indoor track team. We pushed for one this year, but it was not granted. Possibly next year, but the lack of one didn't keep Elsa and Tess from training hard through the winter. We were excited to find out that the USA Track & Field Northeast Zone Championships were being held 7 minutes down the road from us. So they entered and competed.
Elsa ran the 3000m on Saturday evening and came in first, in a fantastic off-season time of 10:44.32. She has been learning to run her race even if that means she spends the first 2 laps in last place. This wasn't easy for her, but she did it! Pacing herself will be important as she will be running some greater competition this upcoming track season, and if you go out too fast, you are done. She's excited to be starting the Spring season off 30+ seconds faster than she started last year. Her hard work is paying off!
I didn't bring my camera the first day, but my mom snapped her coming around the track and I can't believe how grown up she looks, and strong! She had entered the 1500m race the next day, just for fun, and was excited (and a little star struck) when she found out Jessica Lawson would be running it with her. Last year, as a Freshman, Jessica won States in Cross Country, Indoor 3000m, and Outdoor 3000m...the coveted track triple. All as a Freshman.
Peepa coached her, again, to run her own race and she put up a personal best of 4:55.72, 10 seconds faster than she has ever run it before! And only 3 seconds behind Jessica.
Thankfully, I was able to FaceTime with Peepa through both races. What a blessing he has been in this off-season training time. He is like a track wizard, converting times, formulating workouts, and dealing with two crazy emotional girls (Elsa and I) as she works to be all that she can be in track.
Tess ran the 800m and the 400m. The 1500m is her preferred race, but she decided to race, just for fun and see how her speed is coming along. She ran strong and placed 2nd in the 800m and 3rd in the 400m!
Elsa cooling down while Tess warms up:
Micah and Josh (also from our school) have been dedicating a lot of time to training and they raced as well. It's great to see such a small school, without a physical track, excel through what seems to be sheer determination. Ha!

This is what a difference of 3 seconds looks like:
