Sectionals 2014

Last year Elsa was so nervous about her two events she had qualified for.  Last year she was ranked 2nd in the 4x800 and 1st in the 3000, and that is where she ended up for both events.  Winning even that one Sectional Title as an 8th grader was such a big deal for her, for all of us.  Last year.

What a difference a year makes.

This year Elsa qualified for Sectionals in 4 events (well, actually more, but you are only allowed to enter four), and was seeded 1st in all of them.  The 2000m Steeplechase, the 3000m, the 4x800, and the 4x400.  We had talked a lot about the approach to her full day of racing, and the goal was to just win each of her events.  Save herself for the final event, the 4x400.  All of her other races had a very large separation in time between 1st and 2nd, but the final race, the 4x400, had none.  We were tied for first, and Elsa really, really wanted the 4 wins at sectionals.

But all that changed when she realized the Section V Class D Meet Record was within her grasp.  With the 4x800 Sectional Title already secured, she paced herself to not only for the win, but a new Varsity and Meet Record, bettering her time by 10 seconds!

She went on to also win the 3000m, trying to beat that Meet Record as well, and only falling short by 2 seconds.  She proudly ran her second fastest 3000m in a race that she paced herself in.  Her training is paying off!

3 Sectional Titles was apparently her limit this year.  The 4 wins will have to be saved for another year.  She led off in the 4x400 and put in her fastest split to date, 62 seconds.  The team gave it all they had, even bettering the Varsity Record by 5 seconds, but fell short by 2 seconds.  Elsa made Fillmore history by winning 3 Sectional Titles in one track meet, and the amazing thing is she was joined in that honor by Tess.  Tess also ran in the 4x800, and won the 800 & the 1500, completing the day with second place in the 4x400.

So proud of both of these girls!  Can't wait to see what Friday holds at State Qualifiers!!
