Super 8's

Elsa and Tess haven't had much competition this year in their local meets, and that makes it pretty difficult to post good times, or to see what they can really do.  Super 8's is one of the only times during the regular season that gives them an opportunity to run against some real competition. This meet invites the best 8 times in each event from the 3 surrounding counties, toting it the "best of the best".

It was a great night!  Tess won the 1500 easily with a new Varsity Record of 4:52.91.  The 800 was a glorious race that seemed all but decided when the runners made the final turn into the last 100m stretch.  Tess was in 4th for the whole race, but kicked it up another notch and it looked like everyone else was standing still while she sprinted to the finish line, winning it and tying the Varsity Record.  The look of surprise and joy on her face will be something I remember for a long time!

Elsa had already run the first leg of the 4x800, and wasn't sure how much that would affect her main race, the 3000.  The only real competition she would be facing is a girl who she has raced against 4 times in the past 2 years.  Elsa has beaten her in each of those races, but Hope had recently posted a time of 10:30 (18 seconds faster than Elsa's best 3000 time), and was seeded 1st, making Elsa pretty nervous.  Elsa knew if anyone could push her to her limits it would be Hope.

Elsa's goal was to allow Hope to set the pace, try to hold onto that fast speed and hopefully out kick her in the final lap...and she did!  Elsa's final time was 10:24.13!!!  24 seconds faster than the Varsity Record she set at this meet last year, 16 seconds faster than the Meet Record, and only 1.5 seconds off the State Standard, and ranking her 20th in the State! It was great to see that all of Elsa's hard work and training is starting to reap benefits.  Hope really pushed Elsa forward and came across the line with a time of 10:27.14 which is a personal best and a new Varsity Record for her.  It will be a great match-up between these 2 in the years to come!

Here is some spliced together video my mom took while watching the race.  Two segments of Elsa and Hope running past the crowd, a video of how high strung Mama is when watching her favorite daughter race, and finally, Elsa sprinting down the line to win it all.  At the finish line she is passing girls who have a final lap to go, and the closest time to Elsa and Hope was a full minute behind these two.
